EXPLANATORY NOTE ON THE CURRICULUM OF THE SPECIALITY OF EUROPEAN STUDIES - Bachelor’s Degree
The new curriculum of the speciality of European Studies, elaborated by the functional all-university European Studies Department, was adopted by the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Philosophy on June 8, 1999, and comes into force as from the current 1999/2000 academic year. The speciality of European Studies is the Bulgarian analogue of the speciality, as it has become established in the last 30 years as one of the most prestigious and promising ones at a number of universities and higher schools throughout the world. In the process of elaborating the curriculum, use has been made of the experience of such educational institutions as Stanford University, Trinity College, the Sorbonne, The College of Europe, etc.
The Bachelor’s Degree studies have the duration of 4 years - 8 terms. The acquisition of this degree is completed by sitting for a final examination, in writing, in the speciality and in the first foreign language.
The academic hours per week are between 24-28.
The curriculum contains 17 compulsory disciplines, two of them being assessed on a current basis, and the rest - by an examination. It offers the students the opportunity to choose, after the second year, a narrower specialisation of their studies, from among six distinct modules (Law, Culture and Civilisation, Economics, Information and Media, Politics and Administration, Environment), each of which consists of at least five compulsory disciplines. Optionally, the students may also acquire a pedagogic qualification, in compliance with the regulations of Sofia University.
The speciality can be studied in the regular academic form of istruction only.
The European Studies speciality gives an opportunity for the acquisition of a Bachelor’s Degree, and then also of a Master’s Degree (in European Integration, Intercultural Dialogue, Public Administration, etc), both at the Faculty of Philosophy and at other faculties of Sofia University, and at all other higher schools in Bulgaria and abroad as well.
